These questions were provided by a great friend of mine Arthur Kaligos. We met on a Student Ambassador trip to Australia and New Zealand when we were 15 years old, and have been friends ever since.

Where do you see the future of plastic heaven going?

I would hope to see Plastic Heaven become more than just a clothing line. I always dreamed of having a storefront, but having it function more as a community center. A place that would sell Plastic Heaven and other independent designers, but at the same time function as a home for people wanting to get into the business of the arts. Offer internships, classes on art, design, photography, music, have performances and eventually be able to provide scholarships to students that want to pursue a degree in the arts.

Basically I want the place that I never had growing up. A place where a group of creative folk can gather, learn and inspire each other.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

Good question. I appreciate all the fundamentals (art, dance, music, design, film, and photography) and definitely think that they influence me on a daily basis. Out of all of those things I would say music has the most influence. I envision fashion shows to music on my drive to my hometown (Virginia Beach), and I have had some pretty inspiring moments on those 3 1/2 hour drives. I've always been a dreamer and a daydreamer so it works for me. I guess you could say that I'm inspired by challenges, music and dreams.

What is the philosophy behind your line? What messages if any are you trying to convey about the clothing?

I would definitely say the philosophy for Plastic Heaven can be summed up in 3 words, Want Not Need. This is a phrase that my mother drilled into my head when I was a child. If we were out in a store, grocery or mall, like every child in America I would see all the toys and candy that had been drilled into my head by television commercials and declare to my mother that I needed them. Can I get it? I need it!!! But she would always reply with something along the lines of, "You want it Davinia, you do not need it." Finally I got the point, there was no chance of me getting that sugar cereal, I was going to have to settle for Total with raisins (natures candy). So, I hope by fulfilling your "want" of PH Goods, I will be able to fill another persons need. I am working on partnering with a local Washington D.C. after school program that focuses on kids interested in fashion design. I think that it is an amazing opportunity to support the community and encourage the designers and entrepreneurs of the future.

How hard is it to start your own line?

This is the most challenging thing I have ever done in my life. But it is growing and stretching me in a way that I would have never even imagined if I was working for someone else. I took a leap of faith, and I could not imagine myself doing anything other than this. I am eternally great full for being blessed with this opportunity.

what is your process when you begin to plan a new piece or an entire line?

It really is a case-by-case basis. Right now I am working on a cut and sew collection that was inspired by one of my favorite books as a child. So, I have been re-reading the book, watching all of the different versions of the movie, taking lots of photographs, listening to the soundtrack and sketching along the way.

who inspires you the most?

As far as fashion designers are concerned Vivienne Westwood is by far my favorite. Not only is she an amazing designer, she has the unpredictability characteristic that I aspire to show in my collections. The only thing predictable about her collections is that they will show a strong message and that you will be surprised with what she comes up with next. On a daily basis other artists, designers, and entrepreneurs inspire me. They motivate me even more to keep going and remind me that it is possible. I have the most amazing group of creative friends. The fact that a dream even developed into a reality is inspiring, so hopefully I'll have to dream bigger.
